Action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme has celebrated his 61st birthday these days, and he proves that he is still in very good shape every time his new photo is published. The icon of the movie of the 90s and the master of martial arts still keeps an eye on his form, so he regularly goes to the gym, and although he has drastically changed his appearance over the years, many agree that he looks better than ever.
Van Damme fell in love with martial arts as a ten-year-old and often went to karate classes with his father in Belgium, where he grew up. When he was 18, he was given a black belt, after which he began exercising hard to work on his weight. At one point he even enrolled in ballet, and later pointed out that ballet is an art, but also one of the most strenuous sports ever. “If you can survive an hour of ballet, you can survive training any other sport in the world,” the famous action hero said in an interview.
Martial arts became his real hobby, and he won tournaments wherever he appeared. He first appeared in the film in 1979, and after gathering enough money and experience, he moved to the United States. Together with a childhood friend, he wanted to realize his big dream of becoming an actor, and they did various jobs to have enough for food and rent.
He befriended Chuck Norris, who helped him enter the world of acting. He came into the limelight in the late ’80s, when he arrived in Hollywood and appeared in the movie“ Bloodsport, ”and later his roles began to line up one after the other. He became planetarily popular, and his fans couldn’t imagine an action movie without him.
In the mid-90s, when he was at the peak of his career, Van Damme plunged into the hell of drugs. He spent about $ 10,000 a week on cocaine, culminating in 1999 when police caught and arrested him for driving under the influence of drugs. He went to rehab clinics several times but to no avail. He eventually said goodbye to addictions thanks to exercise.
During his turbulent career, he also led an equally interesting private life, standing in front of the altar five times with four different women. He has been married to his current wife, bodybuilder Gladys Portugues, 64, since 1999, when they were married for the second time. Namely, they first uttered the fateful yes in 1987 and divorced five years later. The couple also had a daughter, Bianca. He filled the media especially the moment it was revealed that he had an affair with a colleague from the film, Kylie Minogue, but their relationship did not last long.
