Following the acquisition of Night School Studio, Netflix continues to invest in and develop its video game portfolio. It is, in particular, the acquisition of the Finnish firm Next Games, which mostly develops mobile video games.
It was created in 2013 and is situated in Helsinki, Finland, under the leadership of Teemu Huuhtanen. Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales, The Walking Dead: Our World, and The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land are among the mobile games developed by Next Games.
The acquisition is being processed and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2022 at a cost of $ 72 million.
Next Games CEO Teemu Huuhtanen commented on the acquisition:
“We are relentlessly focused on achieving our vision: we aim to be the partner of choice for global entertainment organizations, creating authentic and long-lasting interactive entertainment based on the world’s top properties.”
Joining together with Netflix, the world’s largest streaming service, is a logical and exciting chance to continue our goal of producing interactive games that the entire world will love. Our close collaboration with Netflix on Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales has already demonstrated that we make a strong team. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to expand the studio on all fronts while continuing our common objective.”
According to Michael Verdu, vice president of Netflix’s gaming division:
“Next Games has an experienced management team, a solid reputation for mobile games based on fun franchises, and solid operational capabilities.” We are thrilled that Next Games will join Netflix as a core studio in a strategic location and a significant talent market, thereby boosting our in-house gaming studio capabilities.
Despite the fact that we have only recently begun developing games, I am confident that we will be able to construct a portfolio of world-class games that will delight our subscribers all over the world in collaboration with Next Games.”
