The Golden Globes boycotted by stars and TV

A catastrophic present and a very uncertain future. The Golden Globes, the glittering press awards that served as a traditional starter at the Oscars, are experiencing a sudden meltdown. It all started last year with some revelations from black journalists who were not admitted to be part of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who brought out what everyone ignored or pretended to ignore: in the association, there were no members belonging to ethnic minorities . And the boycott of Hollywood has started, with former winners like Tom Cruise who have even returned the statuettes won. And so the awards ceremony of the 79th edition will have no celebrities and it will not be broadcast on TV , NBC has pulled back from broadcasting.

The organizers of the Golden Globes have decided to hold the ceremony next Sunday even without an audience: the body has been the target of accusations, as well as of racism, sexism, harassment, and corruption for months. The HFPA however wants to move forward to highlight the association’s “philanthropic work”. “Over the past 25 years, the HFPA has donated more than $ 50 million to various charities,” the organizers said in a statement. However, no audience is expected in Berverly Hills on Sunday, with the justification of the health situation and the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

In March, over 100 authors wrote to the HFPA calling for an end to “discriminatory and unprofessional behavior, ethical gaps and allegations of corruption“. The organization quickly announced a series of reforms, including unprecedented recruiting action to improve minority representation. Warner Bros, Netflix, and Amazon have made it known that they will no longer work with HFPA until significant changes are implemented. But at the moment it does not seem that the announced changes will be enough. Meanwhile, the Critics Choice Awards, hitherto “minor” awards, are running for success at the Globes.
