The Uncharted movie is the latest video game movie in development, and with its first trailer and official release date, we bring you everything we know so far about it.
The Uncharted film has been in development with its pluses and minuses for 10 years. During these last years, the film of the iconic video game has received massive changes several times. It was even rumored that the feature film would never be released.
But now Sony is putting the engine on full steam and Tom Holland will be the main face of the film. For this reason, and so that you do not miss anything, we collect all the details of the Uncharted film.
Release date of Uncharted, the film
The film is scheduled to be released on February 18th.
The first trailer of the film caused a revolution by a more than well-known cameo in it. In it, we can see Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg giving life to the characters of Nathan Drake and Sully, respectively.
In the trailer of Uncharted, we can see how Nathan becomes Sully’s protégé and joins him in his search for an ancient treasure. Likewise, Sam, Nathan’s brother, also enters the scene, leaving Nate “a final clue” that could take him in the right direction. Similarly, iconic actor Antonio Banderas appears in the trailer as the villain searching for the same treasure as Nate and Sully.
Although the trailer is quite short, it shows us that the film will be very similar to what we have experienced in video games. Both Nathan and Sully will get into pretty dangerous missions to save the treasures from the bad guys.
Casting and plot
As we have said before, Tom Holland will play Nathan Drake while Mark Wahlberg will play Sully,Nathan’s mentor. However, this was not always the case since at first Wahlberg should have been the one who would give life to the protagonist.
Also, due to the age of both actors, many think that Uncharted will be a prequel to the first game Uncharted: Drake’s Treasure. Likewise, it seems that it will pick up many of the plots that we have seen in the franchise.
The director of also Venom, Zombieland and Suicide Squad has come to the conclusion that a video game movie should recreate the atmosphere of the game, but it should not approach the experience of it, simply because they will not be able to match it.
Part of the problem is that they’re trying to recreate the games. Since the players have had such a visceral experience, I don’t think you can compete with that. I wanted to make sure [Uncharted] worked as a movie first. […] When you’re playing the games, it feels like you’re inside a movie,so having the opportunity to bring it to life was a dream come true. […] We’ve tried to take inspiration from the games whenever we could, but we also wanted to arrange the pieces so that they weren’t a part of the games at all. I’ve never seen anything like the end of our third act and I think it’s going to blow people’s mind ” said Ruben Fleischer, director of Uncharted.
Let’s try to look at it in reverse: the big movie-to-video game adaptations resulted in titles that had little logic in relation to the film, such as the Star Wars trilogy. What made them great games were the creative licenses that the filmmakers took to transfer the film to a game. Why couldn’t it work the same in reverse?
Of course, you have to take into account the first thing the director said: it must work like a movie. That is, it is not enough to leave the original plot and propose something new, but that new must also be good and attractive, that is why the old adaptations of Street Fighter and Mario Bros. did not work but it is going so well for The Witcher and Arcane.
