One of the most beautiful beaches in Messenia in the Peloponnese bears one of the least attractive names you can imagine. But when you reach Foneas Beach ("Killer") in Greece, you will forget its unfortunate name and indulge in a magical landscape. The recognizability of this beach is a huge rock in the middle of the sea, which is ideal for jumping or diving in the surrounding crystal blue waters.
It is located closer to the dolphin beach, just four kilometers southeast of Kardamili, on the way to Laconia in the Peloponnese. Marking the place where the famous Foneas gorge ends, it is understandably one of the favorite places of the locals during the summer. Still a well-kept secret, Foneas Beach is a favorite place of the locals, but it is never crowded, which makes it the perfect place for a more peaceful vacation.
The origin of the name
There are numerous legends about the origin of the name of this beach. The most common refers to a pirate who had a shipwreck there and found himself on this beach. He hid there in a nearby cave until he re-enabled the ship, but in the meantime, he had to rob and kill everyone who passed there. This is how the local tradition of naming the beach Foneas - Killer came about.
However, despite its frightening name, Foneas is truly one of the most beautiful beaches in the Peloponnese. It is a pebble beach, with crystal clear blue-green waters and a green natural landscape with rocky cliffs surrounding it. There is a small canteen where drinks are sold, there are no umbrellas and deck chairs, so you have to bring your own things. But once you find yourself there, you will forget about everything and enjoy the clear water and the stunning natural landscape. The untouched beauty of this place is unreal and ranks among the most beautiful beaches in this area.
