Lady Gaga, Nicole Kidman, Will Smith, Kristen Stewart, and Denzel Washington were nominated for Best Actor/Actress.
The dramas “The Power of the Dog” and “Belfast” lead in the number of Golden Globe nominations, published on Monday, in the year of controversy for this award.
The film “Belfast”, set in Northern Ireland in the 1970s, and the western “The Power of the Dog” by director Jane Campion received seven nominations each.
Four nominations are for a satire on global warming “Don’t Look Up”. “King Richard”, a film about the father of tennis players Venus and Serena Williams, a new version of the classic musical “West Side Story“, this time directed by Steven Spielberg, and a story about growing up “Licorice Pizza”.
Among the best actors are Lady Gaga (“House of Gucci”), Nicole Kidman (“Being Ricardos”), Will Smith (“King Richard”), Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”) and Denzel Washington (Tragedy Macbeth).
Netflix movies have 17 nominations.
The winners will be announced on Jan. 9, but the format of the ceremony is not yet known after NBC television canceled a broadcast earlier that year in Beverly Hills over the controversy over the film-voting organization.
The Hollywood Foreign Journalists Association (HFPA) has been criticized for having no black members, and there is controversy over whether their close relationship with Hollywood studios influences the selection of nominees and winners. Tom Cruise, therefore, returned his three Golden Globes.
The HFPA, meanwhile, has received 21 more members, six of whom are black, has banned gifts and favors, and introduced training on sexual abuse and diversity. The association now has 105 members.
“Although the Golden Globes will not be broadcast in January 2022, we will continue our 78-year tradition,” the HFPA wrote in an open letter ahead of Monday’s nominations.
“The last eight months have been difficult, but we are proud of the changes we have made so far.”
Despite this, major film and television companies distanced themselves from the awards and did not submit their programs for consideration, as they have done in the past, Reuters reports.
It is still unknown whether the nominated actors, directors, and musicians will attend the ceremony early next year.
