The name of Audrey Hepburn, a Hollywood icon, has been a park in Brussels since Wednesday, located not far from the house where she was born in 1929.

At the entrance to “Audrey Hepburn Park”, there is a bronze bust with her image, a copy of the one that was placed in Arnhem (Netherlands) in the 90s, where the actress’ mother’s family comes from. “There are now two busts in the two cities where she spent her childhood,” said her son Sean Hepburn Ferrer, who attended the park’s inauguration on the day the movie star would turn 93. The bronze sculpture was made at the request of the family by the Dutch artist Kees Verkade after the death of Audrey Hepburn.

Audrey Hepburn received the Oscar as a 23-year-old for the role of a princess in the film “Roman Holiday”, in which she played along with Gregory Peck, and unforgettable are her roles in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, “Charade”, “Love in the Afternoon” and “My Fair Lady”.

Audrey Hepburn, real name Audrey Ruston, was born on May 4, 1929, in Brussels’ Ixelles district. Her mother was from a Dutch aristocratic family, and her father was British and worked for the Belgian branch of the Bank of England. She spent the first years of her life in Brussels, and then, after her father left the family, she lived with her mother in Arnhem during the war, said Sean Hepburn Ferrer, a son born in 1960, from Audrey’s marriage to American film actor Mel Ferrer.

At the beginning of World War II, Audry’s schooling in England had to be interrupted and her mother, in fear and for safety, returned her to the Netherlands. However, the difficulties of the war did not bypass them there either, and the legend says that she ate crushed tulip leaves and grass baked in bread when at some point they faced a shortage of food.

Later, Audrey continues her education. She went to ballet classes and held performances to raise money to fight the Nazis. She also volunteered for some time at the hospital treating wounded soldiers, including a future producer in whose film she would later play a role.

She decided to start acting because she could not become a prima ballerina, due to her height and weakness, which was a consequence of starvation during the war. The roles earned her five Oscar nominations, and during her career, she won the Golden Globe and Bafta awards, and in 1988 she became a UNICEF ambassador and until the end of her life, in 1993, she was dedicated to humanitarian work.

It is often pointed out that Audrey’s influence was extended to the field of fashion, she was considered an icon of style and a muse of fashion designers. Two biographical films are dedicated to her life, in 2000 a film called “The Audrey Hepburn Story” was made and in 2020 the film “Audrey”.

At the beginning of the year, it was announced that Rooney Mara will play Audrey Hepburn, but she will also appear as a producer of a film about the life and work of a movie star, a great humanitarian, and a style icon. For now, it is known that the director of the film will be Luca Gudagnino, best known to the general public for the film “Call Me By Your Name”, which won the “Oscar” award for best-adapted screenplay.
